System of Practice

“Everyday you have five things to practise: Keep up the effort to be mindful and aware; remain in as positive a state as possible; do not lose sight of your ultimate goal at any time; apply at every level whatever you have realised or discovered at the highest level of your being; do your best for other people, do what you can to help them.

This is your spiritual life and this is your spiritual practice. Whatever has been said by all the different Buddhist teachers in the course of several hundred years of development is contained in these five things.”  Sangharakshita, ‘Nagarjuna’s Precious Garland’

On this retreat we will explore Sangharakshita’s system of practice: a dynamic model of spiritual development that brings together all the moods and movements of the Dharma life.  Each stage is both a step on the path and an aspect of practice that we are continuously developing.  The retreat gives us a chance to step back and examine how we experience the stages in our own life, and how we could embody them more fully.  We also get a new perspective on ordination as a stage on the path and a commitment to a multifaceted, beautiful and profound life.
