What Is The Order?

Required reading:

The main material we will be studying on this retreat is the handbook entitled What is the Order? produced by Tiratanaloka - there is a link to the file below.  Please ensure you read this before the retreat and come prepared with questions and areas for discussion for your study group, as this will help you and others get the most from the retreat.  Please bring the handbook with you.

Order Training Retreat

On this retreat we will study material with Dharmacharinis who support women in the ordination process.  It is a chance for us to explore our own practice, spend time together and exchange ideas; creating a network of support for this important work.

The Nature of Existence

'The unconditional acceptance of the conditioned is itself the unconditioned.'

We'll be exploring the three marks of conditioned existence as elucidated in the book The Three Jewels in a week of study, shrine room practice, and spiritual friendship.

This retreat was initially for carers and they were given priority booking.  Due to low bookings, it is now open to non-carers too.

What is the Order? (WO219)

'It is only through intensity of commitment and practice that you achieve any results. For commitment to be strong is has, in a sense, to be narrow.'

What does it mean to commit your life to a specific spiritual community? We’ll explore kalyana mitrata and the significance of the private and public ordinations to find our own answers.

Going for Refuge

'As a committed Buddhist one goes for refuge - or tries to - all the time. As one’s appreciation of the three jewels grows, one’s going for refuge becomes correspondingly more profound.'

Sangharakshita has said that the act of going for refuge is what makes one a Buddhist. What does this actually mean? And what are the possible results of this act for us?
